The Whitehall House

House facade

The clients for this new residence were primarily concerned with integrating its architecture with site. They wanted the house to be married to the sand dunes, leaving existing trees as close as possible to the exterior walls to make the house look like it had always been there. They also used the height of the house to take advantage of their views of Lake Michigan to the west and Duck Lake to the east.

Great Room Master Bedroom

The kitchen is the heart of this house. We considered many different layouts for this special site but ended up with two relatively simple rectangles which are joined by a center hinge. The kitchen is circular in plan, symbolically and functionally becoming the center pin which engages the two adjacent wings.
